Kundapura: Congress-CPI (M) alliance Kalavathi Elected Town Municipality President

Congress Supported, CPIM's councilor Kalavathi and Haladi Srinivas Shetty Supported councilor Nagaraj Kamadhenu were elected as the president and vice-president of Kundapur Town Municipality respectively.
The election for the post of president and vice-president was held on Friday September 20. As per the reservation of the government, Kalavathi elected unopposed.


Although the elections for local bodies were held in March this year, the election for the heads of municipal council had been delayed by nearly six months owing to the declaration of MLA and MLC by-elections and the model code of conduct being in force. The posts of municipal president reserved for ST and vice-president was reserved for general category.
In the 23-member body, Congress CPIM alliance (Congress 9, CPIM 2) has 11 members, and Bharatiya Janata Party has 12  members.

As soon as the election process began on Friday, Chandrashekar of the CPI(M)-Congress alliance, representing Bahudur Sha ward and Nagaraj of BJP from West Block ward submitted their nomination papers for the post of vice president, while Kalavathi of the CPI(M)-Congress alliance, representing JLB ward was the only candidate to submit nomination papers for President's post.

Nagaraj Kamadhenu of BJP and Chandrashekar Kharvi of Congress who had contested for the post of vice-president. Nagaraj Kamadhenu defeated Chandrashekar Kharvi, Congress and CPM supported candidate with a margin of 13-12.

MP Jayaprakash Hegde voted for the CPI(M)-Congress alliance. Kundapur MLA Haladi Shirnivas Shetty Voted for BJP candidate. Finally, BJP candidate Nagaraj obtained 13 votes and elected vice president.

Election Officer Kundapur Thasildar Gayathri Nayak  declared  Kalavathi and Nagaraj Kamadhenu  as elected president and vice-president, respectively. Supporters and party workers celebrated the victory of Kalavathi  and Nagaraj Kamadhenu by taking out a procession and bursting crackers.
