New Delhli: Kannadiga Justice H L Dattu to be Next Chief Justice of India
New Delhi: Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu ( H L Dattu), hailing from Karnataka, will take over as the next Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court, effective coming September. He will hold the post until superannuation on December 3, 2015.
He will be the fourth Kannadiga to hold the top post. Earlier, Justice E S Venkataramaiah, M N Venkatachalaiah and S Rajendra Babu from the state had held the position.
Born on December 3, 1950, Justice Dattu enrolled himself as an advocate on October 23, 1975. He first practised in civil, criminal and Constitutional matters in Bangalore.
He later served as High Court's government pleader for sales tax department from 1983 to 1990, government advocate from 1990 to 1993, standing counsel for income tax department from 1992 to 1993 and senior standing counsel for IT department from 1993 to 1995.
He was appointed a judge of the High Court of Karnataka on December 18, 1995 and Chief Justice of the High Court of Chattisgarh on February 12, 2007.
Upon transfer to the High Court of Kerala, he assumed charge of Chief Justice of that state on May 18, 2007. On his elevation to the Supreme Court, he took over as judge on December 17, 2008.
