New Delhi: Police in New Delhi announced their first arrests late Wednesday over the alleged gang-rape of a Danish tourist, with two homeless men detained in connection with the latest shocking sex crime in India’s capital.

“Two person(s) have been arrested in connection with rape case with Danish national,” read a statement from the police, which said both men were “vagabonds” at New Delhi railway station.

One of the men, a 25-year-old originally from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh state, had an iPod music player belonging to the victim in his possession when arrested, the statement said.

The other had a spectacles case and 1,000 rupees in cash.

Police released 15 men detained earlier who provided information about the whereabouts of the suspects, a deputy police commissioner Alok Kumar said by phone.

The 51-year-old woman told police she was raped at knife- point by a group of men between 5 pm and 8 pm on Tuesday in Paharganj neighborhood, which contains many hotels and is close to tourist sites.

The case adds to safety concerns that have deterred women from visiting the world’s second-most populous nation, where the number of reported rapes jumped 57% over the past decade. Indian leaders have struggled to alter male attitudes toward women even after the gang rape and murder of a student in New Delhi in December 2012 triggered an international uproar.

“The message being sent to the world is that if you are a woman, you shouldn’t come to India alone,” said Ranjana Kumari, director of Centre for Social Research, a women’s advocacy group in New Delhi. “It is a matter of great, great concern that this is happening, and we’re not doing enough to stop these attacks.”

Danish ambassador Freddy Svane confirmed in an e-mail that one of his country’s citizens was involved in a rape case. The embassy in New Delhi had no further comments, he said.

A woman was raped in India every 21 minutes on average in 2012, according to the most recent National Crime Records Bureau data, statistics that police say reflect increased confidence among females to report attacks.

The country saw a 35% drop in foreign female tourist arrivals in the first three months of last year, according to a study published in April by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry in India.

In March, a Swiss woman was gang raped while camping with her husband, while a British woman jumped out of the window of her hotel room in Agra — home to the Taj Mahal — to flee an assault by staff. In June, an American woman was gang raped while hitchhiking back to her hotel in the Himalayas.

The Danish tourist was attacked on Tuesday on her final night in India as she returned from the city’s main shopping district and approached a group of men asking for directions, according to Pushkar Singh, the manager at the Hotel Amax Inn, where she was staying. The men robbed her, beat her and then took turns to rape her, he said.

 

Delhi ‘rotting’

“What part of Delhi is safe now?” Singh said in an interview. “There’s a problem of education among a portion of the population, and that’s rotting the city.”

The hotel had seen a decline in tourists since the rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in Delhi prompted a national outcry and made international headlines, Singh said. The Danish tourist was due to fly home at 10 am on Wednesday after spending two nights at his hotel, he said.

Paharganj’s budget hotels, bars and restaurants are popular with backpackers. It is less than a kilometer from Delhi’s main railway station and a short drive from tourist sites such as India Gate, the Mughal-era Red Fort and the presidential palace. BLOOMBERG

South Korea on Sunday said it had expanded its Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) for the first time in six decades, in an apparent response to China’s November 23 decision to set up its first such zone over disputed parts of the East China Sea.

Underlining how Beijing’s decision has heightened regional tensions and, according to many analysts, increased the likelihood of an incident in the contested skies over northeastern Asia, South Korea’s newly expanded ADIZ will overlap with northern areas of China’s zone.

An ADIZ is not a territorial claim, but a defined area in international space within which countries monitor and track aircraft that are heading towards territorial airspace.

China’s November 23 announcement angered both Japan and South Korea, because the zone includes the disputed Diaoyu or Senkaku islands in the East China Sea, which are contested by Japan and China, and the submerged Leodo reef, which is under South Korea’s control. Both countries have made clear they would contest China’s zone by dispatching aircraft to carry out patrols through the area. China last week said it had scrambled jets to intercept at least 12 Japanese and U.S. aircraft.

Seoul’s announcement on Sunday was seen as an attempt to bolster its control over parts of the East China Sea surrounding the Leodo reef, which, earlier, lay beyond the southern edge of its zone. The eastern and western limits of its ADIZ have not been expanded.

The South Korean Defence Ministry in a statement said the new ADIZ was “designed to have its southern boundary match the country’s broader flight information region (FIR), and includes airspace over the South-controlled reef of Leodo and the islands of Marado and Hongdo,” the Seoul-based Yonhap news agency said. The government said the expanded zone would go into effect starting December 15, and would not impose restrictions on civilian flights.

The Defence Ministry said it had “offered sufficient explanations to related countries”. President Park Geun-hye is thought to have briefed U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on the move during talks on Friday. Mr.

Biden was in South Korea following stops in Tokyo and Beijing. His three-nation tour was aimed at boosting economic ties and reinforcing U.S. interests in the Pacific, although the visit was overshadowed by the tensions surrounding the ADIZ issue.

Mr. Biden was quoted as saying by Yonhap that he “appreciated President Park’s explanation and South Korea’s efforts”. An unnamed South Korean official added that he was of the view that South Korea’s ties with China, which had also been briefed about the move, would not “deteriorate seriously” because of the issue.

Chinese officials have defended their move by pointing to Japan’s already established - and larger - ADIZ in the East China Sea.

However, doubts about certain aspects regarding how China planned to enforce its control within the ADIZ raised anxieties. For instance, the Chinese government said it would take unspecified “emergency” defence measures if aircraft entered the zone without filing flight plans with Chinese authorities.

Even as Chinese officials have hit out at Tokyo for making “irresponsible remarks” about the issue, they have appeared to adopt a far more measured tone regarding concerns expressed by South Korea.

Asked how China would respond to a move by South Korea to expand its airspace, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei told reporters on Friday China was “ready to stay in communication” with Seoul “based on the principle of equality and mutual respect”. He did, also, appear to rule out talks with Japan on the issue. “The point is,” he said, “Japan does not face up to history and reality, and fails to adopt the correct approach on relevant issues”.

South African anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela died aged 95 at his Johannesburg home on Thursday after a prolonged lung infection, plunging his nation and the world into mourning for a man hailed by global leaders as a moral giant.

Although Mandela had been frail and ailing for nearly a year, Zuma's announcement late on Thursday of the death of the former president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate shook South Africa.

Tributes began flooding in almost immediately for a man who was an iconic global symbol of struggle against injustice and of racial reconciliation.

US President Barack Obama said the world had lost "one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth".

PM Manmohan Singh said, "A giant among men has passed away. This is as much India's loss as South Africa's. He was a true Gandhian. His life and work will remain a source of eternal inspiration for generations to come. I join all those who are praying for his soul."

British Prime Minister David Cameron called Mandela "a hero of our time" and said "a great light has gone out in the world".

Ordinary South Africans were in shock. "It feels like it's my father who has died. He was such a good man, who had good values the nation could look up to. He was a role model unlike our leaders of today," said Annah Khokhozela, 37, a nanny, speaking in Johannesburg

A somber Zuma made a national broadcast to announce the death of South Africa's first black president, who emerged from 27 years in apartheid prisons to help guide Africa's biggest economy through bloodshed and turmoil to democracy.

"Fellow South Africans, our beloved Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the founding president of our democratic nation, has departed," Zuma said in the nationally televised address.

"Our people have lost a father. Although we knew this day was going to come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss. His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, passion and humanity, earned him their love," he added.

"Giant for justice"

Mandela would receive a full state funeral, Zuma said, ordering flags to be flown at half mast.

The UN Security Council was in session when the ambassadors received the news of Mandela's death. They stopped their meeting and stood for a minute's silence.

"Nelson Mandela was a giant for justice and a down-to-earth human inspiration," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters. "Nelson Mandela showed what is possible for our world and within each one of us if we believe, dream and work together for justice and humanity."

Obama, the first black American president, described Mandela as an inspiration: "Like so many around the globe, I cannot fully imagine my own life without the example that Nelson Mandela set, and so long as I live I will do what I can to learn from him," he said in a televised address at the White House shortly after the announcement of Mandela's death.

"A free South Africa at peace with itself - that's an example to the world, and that's Madiba's legacy to the nation he loved.

Mandela rose from rural obscurity to challenge the might of white minority apartheid government - a struggle that gave the 20th century one of its most respected and loved figures.

He was among the first to advocate armed resistance to apartheid in 1960, but was quick to preach reconciliation and forgiveness when the country's white minority began easing its grip on power 30 years later.

He was elected president in landmark all-race elections in 1994 and retired in 1999.

World's most famous political prisoner

South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party said the country and the world had lost "a colossus".

"His life gives us the courage to push forward for development and progress towards ending hunger and poverty," it said in a statement.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, an honor he shared with FW de Klerk, the white Afrikaner leader who released from jail arguably the world's most famous political prisoner.

As president, Mandela faced the monumental task of forging a new nation from the deep racial injustices left over from the apartheid era, making reconciliation the theme of his time in office.

The hallmark of Mandela's mission was the Truth and Reconciliation Commission which probed apartheid crimes on both sides of the struggle and tried to heal the country's wounds. It also provided a model for other countries torn by civil strife.

In 1999, Mandela handed over power to younger leaders better equipped to manage a modern economy - a rare voluntary departure from power cited as an example to African leaders.

In retirement, he shifted his energies to battling South Africa's AIDS crisis, a struggle that became personal when he lost his only surviving son to the disease in 2005.

Mandela's last major appearance on the global stage came in 2010 when he attended the championship match of the soccer World Cup, where he received a thunderous ovation from the 90,000 at the stadium in Soweto, the neighborhood in which he cut his teeth as a resistance leader.

Charged with capital offences in the infamous 1963 Rivonia Trial, his statement from the dock was his political testimony.

"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination."

During this interval, the customs, immigration, canteen, ticketing counters and other facilities remained closed.

Now the lacuna has been filled. With a view to encouraging more flights to operate, the airport has been open round the clock from Dec 1. In fact, it is mandatory for any international airport to remain open 24 hours.
If this information is widely publicized, more airlines may be encouraged to introduce new services in this sector. Those overflying the airspace can think of making a stopover. Travelling in the night could mean saving of time for executives, businesspersons and others with a tight schedule.

Denmark and New Zealand were the nations seen as most free of corruption and Somalia was ranked last, according to this year’s Corruption Perceptions Index.

The report, released today by Berlin-based TransparencyInternational, ranks states based on how corrupt their public sectors are perceived to be. More than two-thirds of the 177 countries surveyed in 2013 scored below 50 on a scale where zero is seen as highly corrupt and 100 perceived as very clean. Greece, the epicenter of Europe’s sovereign debt crisis which erupted in 2009, was among the biggest improvers, while Australia was one of those to witness the largest declines.

“All countries still face the threat of corruption at all levels of government, from the issuing of local permits to the enforcement of laws and regulations,” Huguette LaBelle, chairman of Transparency International, said in a statement.
Finland, Sweden, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Luxembourg and Germany were in the top 12 “clean” countries in that order. North Korea, Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan, Libya and Iraq respectively were perceived as the worst for corruption, and ranked from 175th to 171st.
“Corruption within the public sector remains one of the world’s biggest challenges, particularly in areas such as political parties, police and justice systems,” Transparency International said.

Biggest Improvers

The biggest improvers this year were Myanmar, Brunei, Laos, Senegal, Nepal, Estonia, Greece, Lesotho and Latvia. The biggest decliners were Syria, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Mali, Spain, Eritrea, Mauritius, Yemen, Australia, Iceland, Slovenia, Guatemala, Madagascar and Congo Republic, according to Transparency International.
Among the countries and territories seen to have the lowest corruption were the U.K., ranked 14th, Hong Kong 15th, Japan 18th, the U.S. 19th, France 22nd, Estonia 28th, Botswana 30th, Israel 36th, Poland 38th and South Korea 46th.
Italy placed 69, Brazil, Serbia and South Africa tied at 72, China was in slot 80, India 94, Mexico 106, Indonesia 114, Russia 127, Kazakhstan 140, while Iran, Nigeria and Ukraine tied at 144, Zimbabwe was at 157 and Venezuela 160.

Actor Paul Walker, who shot to fame as star of the high-octane street racing franchise "Fast & Furious," died Saturday in a car crash in Southern California. He was 40.

Walker's publicist Ame van Iden confirmed his death, but said she could not elaborate beyond statements posted on Walker's official Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Walker was a passenger in a friend's car and both were headed to a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide, according to a statement posted on his Facebook page. The website for the charity indicated there was an event in Southern California on Saturday to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The Santa Clarita Valley Signal, citing a sheriff's deputy at the scene, said a red Porsche appeared to have lost control and struck a tree.

Deputies arrived at the scene to find a vehicle on fire, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

Once fire crews put the flames out, they found two occupants, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.

Along with Vin Diesel, the 40-year-old Walker has been one of the stalwarts of the "Fast & Furious" movie series, characterized by its racing scenes and attractive cast.

The box-office success of the first film in 2001 fueled sequels. The series' sixth installment came out earlier this year, topping the Memorial Day weekend box office.

At the time of his death, Walker was working on the seventh film of the franchise, with a scheduled release date of 2014.

On his verified Twitter account, Walker described himself as "outdoorsman, ocean addict, adrenaline junkie ... and I do some acting on the side."

Walker also is the star of "Hours," an independent film scheduled to be released December 13 about a father struggling to keep his newborn infant alive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Twitter and other social media exploded with reactions to Walker's death.

"Completely numb and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Paul Walker," wrote one posted "Wow."

Hollywood condolences came from Will Smith, Jack Osbourne, DMX and others.

"No, @RealPaulWalker. No. No. No," tweeted Alyssa Milano. "Rest with the angels. You. Sweet boy. #beauty #love #RIP."

London: Over the last few days, the fans of British actor-comedian Rowan 'Mr Bean' Atkinson were put in a state of gloom with a report of his passing away.
But sources close to him have confirmed that the reports are untrue and baseless. 'Some people have just played a hoax, that's all,' said an associate. The same hoax had been played once earlier in early 2012.
The character of Mr Bean he played over the past two decades have won him millions of fans the world over. The image was so inseparable that a large number of them either are not aware of or had forgotten and did not care about his real name, Rowan Atkinson.

He had expressed in close circles around 2010 that he wanted to shed the image and get rid of the Mr Bean tag. He was looking for some serious roles as an actor. He had confessed to his immediate friends sometime in 2011, when he was 56-years-old, that playing the young-at-heart role of Mr Bean was taking a heavy toll on his body.
He has been credited with saying, "The stuff that has been most commercially successful for me, basically quite physical, quite childish I increasingly feel I'm going to do a lot less of. Apart from the fact that your physical ability starts to decline, I also think someone in their fifties being childlike becomes a little sad. You've got to be careful."

His last appearance as Mr Bean was perhaps at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.  The rumors that spread earlier this week emanated from a report that he had been dropped from the cast of the movie, 'Johny-3', which reportedly led to taking a drastic step. Thankfully it was not true.
His fans would always like to see him in different roles, while there will still be small number who would refuse to see him in any form other than Mr Bean. Here's wishing him a long life.

One Harvard researcher thinks he has found the gene that would enable us to regrow organs and regenerate limbs.
Various genes in our bodies turn on and off and different times over the course of our lives. It is here that scientists are looking for the magical code that would allow us to self-heal.

George Daley of Harvard Medical School was conducting an identification technique for his lab rats. The procedure included the action of clipping the ears or tips of the toes of the mice. Daley noticed that the ears and toes of these little mice would grow back in a matter of days.
The reason for this was because these particular mice had been genetically engineered so that a gene that helps them grow in the womb would continue to work after birth, effectively never turning off.

This gene is called Lin28a and by boosting metabolism, it can trick the body into thinking it is younger than it actually is.

Daley and his team have confirmed that Lin28a can indeed regrow parts of body parts. There are some limitations however.
These limitations were explained in the Scientific American:
“The power of Lin28a appeared to only extend so far. When mice were no longer babies—at five weeks—the scientists were not able to regenerate their limbs, even if the gene was stimulated. And mice with Lin28a activation were never able to repair damage to the heart, suggesting that the protein is not equally effective everywhere in the body.”

So we can conclude that Lin28a does not last forever and it does not work for all body parts. Despite these limitations, there is still hope for finding other genes. The scientists have learnt that bodily healing can be controlled by manipulating metabolic processes and so now they know where to look, they can focus their efforts on finding other genes that might be involoved.
Although full limb regeneration may still be way in the future, this discovery certainly brings us one step closer to being able to regenerate like Wolverine.

Did you know that the Facebook Like and Share buttons are seen more than 22 billion times every day and embedded on 7.5 million websites?
Pretty impressive you have to agree. Facebook has released these figures, along with the announcement that it is giving the online icons a makeover.

The biggest difference that you will notice straight away is that the iconic thumb has disappeared from the Like button. It will now feature in the dialogue box above the button that shows you how many Likes a post or page has.
The redesigned button will now show the Facebook “f” logo rather than the thumb. The colour scheme has also been changed, it will be white on blue instead of blue on white.

According to Peter Yang, a product manager at Facebook, the reason for the change is to optimize the look for high-resolution screens.
Facebook’s blog post announcing the change said that users will start to see the new icons feature on the 7.5 million websites as the company starts to roll it out over the coming weeks.

The opening bell rings on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange as trading starts in Twitter shares

Shares in the micro-blogging site Twitter closed at $44.90, up more than 73% from their initial price of $26 each.

That means after its first day as a public company, Twitter is now valued at a little over $31bn (£19bn).
More than 13 million shares were traded once they became available an hour after the New York Stock Exchange opened.
It is the biggest technology listing since Facebook in 2012.
Twitter floated on the NYSE and not, as some initially expected, the technology-rich Nasdaq exchange, where the likes of Facebook are listed.
It was a big win for the NYSE, which decorated its exterior with banners promoting the offering on Thursday.
Twitter has more than 230 million users, but is yet to make a profit.

Rollercoaster ride

Shares in newly-listed companies are often volatile on their first day of trading.
Within minutes, Twitter's stock price soared more than 80% before closing just below its initial opening price of $45.10 per share.

When Facebook launched on Nasdaq, its shares were priced initially at $38 each. The stock soared within hours of its debut to a high of $45. But its price later slumped.

It only recovered those losses by 11 September 2013, when shares again touched $45.
Its initial public offering (IPO) was also marred by technological glitches and delays.
To prevent Twitter's stock sale from having a similar fate, the NYSE ran tests on 26 October using larger-than-normal share volumes.
Financial scrutiny Twitter is selling 70 million shares, which will raise more than $1.82bn.
The company, which invites users to send tweets in 140 characters or less, has 232 million active users. According to its IPO documents, these users send 500 million tweets a day.
Twitter's financials have been under greater scrutiny since it announced its plan to float, especially given that the company is still loss-making.
It lost $69m in the first six months of 2013, on revenues of $254m. About 85% of revenues come from advertising on its site, and more than 75% of Twitter users access the site from their mobile phone.
Mary Jo White, head of US regulator the Securities and Exchange Commission, recently warned investors to be cautious of the metrics used by technology companies like Twitter, noting that investors have become overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of data.
"In the absence of a clear description, it can be hard not to think that these big numbers will inevitably translate into big profits for the company," she said in a speech.
"But the connection may not necessarily be there."
Big windfall Twitter's founders saw their paper wealth soar to $4bn in the wake of the stock surge early this morning, although boss Dick Costolo said that none of the founders would immediately be selling their shares.
The company's co-founder Evan Williams has a 10% stake in Twitter, making him its biggest shareholder. That stake is now worth a little over $2bn.
Jack Dorsey, another co-founder, also stands to make a fortune from the IPO. His 4% stake is worth more than a billion dollars.
Another co-founder, Biz Stone, is thought to have made millions of dollars by selling share stakes over the last few years.
Big fortunes aside, after the hooplah of the morning, it was very quickly was back to work: Twitter employee Melissa Daimler posted a photo of employees at their desk just hours after the NYSE bell was rung.

Wellington (NDTV): A 25-year-old student of Indian origin who was assaulted outside a fast food restaurant in New Zealand early on Sunday morning has died of his injuries.
Tarun Asthana, a trainee teacher, was critically injured after he was punched by a man outside a McDonald's eatery in Auckland following an altercation. According to reports, the scuffle took place after Asthana allegedly commented on the dress of a young woman who was accompanying his assaulter.

Asthana was rushed to the Auckland City Hospital soon after the attack and was on life support since then. He succumbed to his injuries today.
Eyewitnesses have reportedly told the police that Asthana fell on the ground after he was punched and his head struck the pavement outside the restaurant. He was admitted to hospital in an unconscious state. 

His alleged attacker, 27-year-old Grenville MacFarland, has been arrested in central Auckland.
"She (the woman accompanying the alleged attacker) thought he was hitting on her, and then her boyfriend smashed him in the head. He was just complimenting her," Asthana's friend, who was with him at McDonald's on Saturday night, was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.
A student at the University of Auckland, Asthana was training to become a primary school teacher. His friends said he was the "most nice and peaceful guy around".

A woman in the US state of Florida stabbed her boyfriend in the eye after he allegedly refused her request for sex, the Daily Star reported Thursday.
La Crystal King-Woolfork, 28, has been accused of stabbing her boyfriend in the eye and shoulder in a drunken state after her demand for sex was turned down, the daily reported. 

 
The woman reportedly came to her boyfriend's home with a female friend after having drinks and demanded he have sex with her. The man, however, was not comfortable having sex in front of another female.
According to the report, King-Woolfork attacked her boyfriend with a knife, stabbing him before he took the knife off her. The woman has been charged with attempt to murder.
