Gangolli: Rare Species of Fish Caught in Deep Sea

Kundapura, Sep 10: Now and then, the fishing trade in the coastal districts hits the headlines with some rare catch or other.

When the crew of the Lakshmi Maruti trawl-boat from Gangolli went on a fishing trip earlier this week, they did not expect to return with such a huge single load. They are said to have netted a rare species of fish from the deep sea about 25 nautical miles off the port.

After they made it to the shore, crowds gathered to have a view of the rare catch. But no one could identify it. It appeared like either a skate-fish or a stingray, but without a tail. The two-foot-long fish weighed about 30 kg.

This correspondent made every effort to contact experts. Seniors from the fishing community said that they had not seen anything of its kind in their lifetime. Many knowledgeable persons were not available for contact because of the extended weekend holiday.
